Inverness the Gateway to the Highlands

Inverness is a cultural hub – located astride the River Ness. Uncover the city’s fabulous Scottish cuisine, traditional live music and picturesque riverside walks. We have to say, we've got a lot of love for Inverness. A compact, cosmopolitan city with a lot of heart, and all the wonders of the Highlands on its doorstep - that's a pretty fine combination, don't you think?

The capital of the Highlands offers many a things to see and do, not to mention the fantastic scenery and attractions like.

City Breaks

Inverness really has got all the elements for a memorable city break. Discover its flourishing culinary scene, explore the Victorian Market or Eastgate Shopping Centre for a bit of retail therapy, catch one of the many events at Eden Court and other venues, or take your time to admire art exhibitions in the city's gallery spaces.

Just taking a wander through the handsome city centre is pretty enjoyable too; appreciate Inverness Castle and St Andrew's Cathedral, then stroll along the banks of the River Ness, crossing the suspension bridge for some peace and relaxation on the Ness Islands.

Historical Treasures

From the Bronze Age Clava Cairns to Culloden Battlefield, site of the final, fateful clash of the Jacobite Risings, you can connect with the past at a range of remarkable places in and around the city. Visit the likes of Nairn, a pretty Victorian seaside resort, or book a tour at one of the nearby historic distilleries and discover the secrets of the whisky making process.

Food and Drink

Inverness boasts an excellent choice of restaurants, with cuisine from all over the world, and a number of places offering a superb array of modern Scottish dishes based on ingredients from the rich farmland, wild hill country and pristine coastal and inland waters surrounding the city.

There’s a vibrant pub culture supplying countless fantastic beers and whiskies from some of the best producers on the planet! Inverness also boasts a lively music scene, so if you like a drink and a sing song – Inverness is for you!

Inverness Castle

Inverness Castle can be found nestled on the edge and overlooks the flowing River Ness. The red, sand-stone Castle was built in 1836 however, history goes back to the 1500’s where the castle looked much different than it does today. Ancient history tells how Clan Munro and Clan Fraser took the castle in 1562 after supporting Mary Queen of Scots during the siege of Inverness. Apart from the viewing tower, the castle itself is not open to the public. The viewing tower offers 360 degree views of the Highland capital. You can still access the grounds where you can enjoy the fantastic views over Inverness.
